Winter and Smith are a team of individually skilled people with a variety of disciplines all driven by a desire to make amazing things. Working together we achieve them time and time again.
James Winter’s passion for electronics sparked early, literally, when his homemade burglar alarm set his bed on fire at age six. With a degree in Digital Electronics, he spent nine years in telecoms before moving into defence, designing monitoring and control equipment.
In 2004, he joined Winter & Smith, becoming Managing Director in 2022 after Mike Winter’s retirement. Outside of work, James enjoys cars, motorsports, and crafting sculptures from recycled materials, a true designer at heart.
Mike Winter founded Winter & Smith in 1970, using his electromechanical and electronic expertise to serve industries ranging from packaging to defence. Even after retiring in 2022, over 50 years later, he still drops in for consultancy, proving he truly knows it all.
When he’s not sharing his expertise, Mike stays busy with Amateur Radio, traveling, and tinkering in his home workshop, because for him, design never stops!
Originally from Cheshire, Vicky kickstarted her career as an apprentice at Bentley Motors before heading down to Kent in 2003 to work further in the motor industry.
With a wealth of experience in customer service and marketing, Vicky now manages all accounts and payroll at Winter & Smith, ensuring everything runs like clockwork. When she’s not at work, you’ll find her traveling, reading, or watching all the latest TV shows and films. Looking for recommendations? She’s got the best picks!
Fresh out of the University of Kent with a Masters in Computer Systems Engineering, Stephen joined Winter & Smith as a graduate engineer in 2013, and he’s been pushing the boundaries of tech ever since.
From electronics design and embedded firmware to IoT systems and web development, if it’s got circuits or code, Stephen’s your guy.
Outside of work, he swaps circuit boards for speed, with a passion for cars, motorsports, and gaming – who would’ve thought!
For 37 years, Ian has been the go-to expert for assembling electronics and mechanical systems at Winter & Smith. A true master of his craft, he wields a soldering iron like an artist with a paintbrush, making even the trickiest electronics rework look effortless.
But Ian isn’t all circuits and components, outside of work, he’s just as precise with a shotgun, enjoying clay shooting alongside his love for music, films, and hands-on mechanical projects.
Young talent is the future of this industry, and Callum is proof of that. Balancing his final year of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Mid Kent College with hands-on experience at Winter & Smith, he’s always learning, both in and out of the classroom.
With a passion for 3D design, electronics, and aerospace, Callum’s future in engineering looks bright. His interests include 3D design, electronics and aerospace. He’s also a scout leader. If we were ever stranded on a desert island, we know exactly who we’d want with us!
