Mechanical assembly and manufacture

Our staff at Winter and Smith realised early on that some of our customers were looking for more than just the supply of a circuit board that performed a function; they wanted a completed product which could also include electro-mechanical parts, somewhere to house the electronics and numerous peripheral items.

Our mechanical workshop

Our comprehensive machine shop includes the following:

  • CNC vertical small milling machine/cutter
  • Lathe (started life on a WWII Warship after the allies copied the design from a lathe captured from the Germans!)
  • F.J. Edwards sheet metal Guillotine
  • F.J Edwards sheet metal folder
  • Drill mounted tapping machine
  • Numerous Bench drills
  • Horizontal Linisher

Whilst some of the machinery is very old, it is fully functional and has quite a history.

Precision techniques

Cutting & Metalwork

For cutting front panels and small metal/plastic enclosures we have a Shakepo CNC Router. Taking designs done in DXF drawing format – the dedicated software Carbide Create allows an engineer to create a cut profile and machine materials. Applications for this have included bespoke front panels for projects, adding additional holes/cutouts to equipment customers have already made and making heatsinks.

In terms of metalwork, ee have a XTool laser cutter and engraver with both a 10W blue laser for cutting and a 2W Infra-red laser for engraving metal panels including Anodised Aluminium and Stainless Steel.

For more complex projects, we use the laser to create prototype front panels to check size/positioning – and produce panel blanks to check CNC programming . These panels are then loaded onto the CNC Router and created. We can also create stunning engraving patterns, and engrave these directly onto front panels.

We have a sheet metal guillotine and a metal folder for sheet metalwork fabrication.

We have a Lathe for projects that require spacers and turned parts. We also have two pillar drills and a thread tapping machine (also used in the creation of the above spacers)

3D printers

3d printers on site, that we use for creating fixtures and fittings, and also for 3d printing circuit boards so clients can get a feel for the size and complexity of their projects.

Gluing

For projects where we need to glue parts together, we have a Fisnar 4303N CNC Gluing machine. This machine applies the glue to a join, and then UV cures it in seconds.
