Why monitor fire sprinkler systems?
Not too long ago, the idea of monitoring equipment remotely was out of reach. Now, thanks to IoT technology, businesses can keep an eye on their fire sprinkler systems from anywhere, without the hassle of manual checks. At Winter & Smith, we made it easier for our client to stay on top of regulations while improving efficiency and cutting costs!
With new UK legislation in place, BS9251 compliance now requires that fire sprinkler systems be regularly tested and monitored. Traditionally, this meant sending someone on-site to check everything manually, time-consuming, expensive, and sometimes impractical. Our IoT solution automates the process, giving you instant updates and complete visibility without the extra legwork.
What did the project involve?
- Design of an electronics Remote Monitoring Master Panel
- Embedded firmware for remote monitoring
- Electromechanical and PCB Assembly
- Design of electronics Remote Expansion Panels
- Integrated Modbus Communications between alarm panels
- Design of a monitored input system to detect cable breaks and short circuits
- 4G internet communications
- Design of a bespoke IoT Remote Monitoring Website platform
- Creation of a PC Configuration App
- Electronics Production of 1100 units to date
- EMC Testing
How it works
Our monitoring units connect to the Microsoft Azure IoT Hub using an internet-enabled modem, providing a secure and scalable platform. The system continuously processes data, checking for alarm states, leaks, or system malfunctions. It also picks up on cable breakages, sensor faults, and irregularities, allowing for proactive maintenance before problems arise.
All data is securely stored in the cloud and can be accessed from any web browser. If an issue is detected, SMS or email alerts are instantly sent to the right people, ensuring quick action without the need for constant manual oversight.
Smarter monitoring, better efficiency
With over 25 years of experience, Winter & Smith has helped businesses streamline operations and cut unnecessary costs. Many of our clients previously relied on routine site visits to check their systems, something that’s no longer necessary with real-time monitoring. Our IoT solutions offer:
- Lower maintenance costs – No more unnecessary site visits.
- Increased efficiency – Issues are flagged instantly for faster fixes.
- Better insights – Track system performance and spot trends.
- Effortless compliance – Automatically log data to meet regulations.
Stay ahead with IoT!
