Prototyping a Smart Water Flow Management System

Keeping things flowing...

For our latest prototype, we tackled a challenge straight from the world of domestic water systems. Designed (and by that, we mean wrapped up this morning!) for a client needing to manage the flow of water pressure, this system is all about precision and control.

The client needed a solution to monitor and manage water flow in real-time. The system had to detect water levels in header tanks, measure current pressure, and track flow paths throughout the building. When specific conditions were met, the system would automatically activate valves to stop water flow to certain areas.

As well as designing the actual electronics, and making a pair of prototypes – the client also needed the ability to test all the functionality on the bench to prove it all worked, before fitting it to a trial domestic system.  Part of the design brief was to make a test jig, that allowed the operator to manually generate and monitor all the conditions of the system.

Here’s what we brought to the table:

Electronics design of 4 circuit boards

We designed four custom circuit boards tailored to the unique requirements of the system. These boards form the backbone of the solution, integrating sensors, control logic, and valve operations for seamless water flow management.

3D CAD Modelling

Precision is key when it comes to fitting everything together. Our 3D CAD models ensured that all components were perfectly aligned, allowing for efficient assembly and smooth integration into the final system.

Prototype Production

Prototyping is where ideas come to life. We produced two fully functional prototype units that demonstrated the system’s capabilities and gave the client a tangible preview of the final product.

Embedded Software Development

Custom software is the brain behind the operation. We wrote and tested embedded code that managed sensor readings, decision-making algorithms, and valve controls, ensuring the system performed flawlessly.

Custom Test Rig

To guarantee reliability, we built a bespoke test rig that allowed operators to manually simulate various conditions. This enabled thorough bench testing of the prototypes before deployment, ensuring everything worked as it should under real-world scenarios.

The results

The completed system is an intelligent, adaptable solution for water flow management. With its robust design and thorough pre-installation testing capabilities, the client can confidently deploy it in the field, knowing it will handle even the most demanding conditions.

At Winter & Smith, whether you need custom electronics, embedded software, or a full test rig, we’re here to help bring your ideas to life.
