Sometimes a simple fix is needed
The client’s current setup allowed them to program their board via a dedicated port, but troubleshooting was a challenge. With only two LEDs for diagnostics, keeping track of increasingly complex software behaviours became nearly impossible. They needed a way to view clear, real-time feedback and interact with their system directly.
Analysing client hardware for improvements
We took a close look at their hardware and identified an opportunity: two spare pins on the programming port could be configured as a serial port. Leveraging this, we designed a custom USB converter module that connected the board to a PC, allowing diagnostic data to be viewed in real-time on a screen. This module also enabled the use of a PC keyboard to control functions like stopping or starting specific processes.
To protect the circuit and keep everything neat, we also designed and 3D-printed a simple, sturdy case.
How it helped
With this new setup, the client could see readable diagnostics instantly and interact with their software during development. This dramatically sped up debugging and system development, allowing them to deliver their product on time.
