Ensuring operator safety in a high-noise environment
When the Formula One World Champions Mercedes AMG approached Winter and Smith Electronics, the stakes were high! In their UK manufacturing facility, machines and engines are tested to their limits, generating extreme noise levels, and necessitating a lot of hearing protection. The challenge? Design an intelligent system that visually alerts operators when hearing protection is required.
An intelligent noise monitoring system
At Winter and Smith Electronics, we developed a wireless mesh network of 30 noise detector modules, each equipped with a custom “WEAR HEARING PROTECTION” sign. These modules detect when local noise levels exceed safe thresholds and instantly alert operators by lighting up the sign. The system also communicates with a central controller for comprehensive monitoring.

A scalable system of detectors that eliminates the need for extensive wiring while ensuring real-time updates.
- Zone-Based Buffer System
Software that allows grouping zones together, creating “buffer zones” around noisy areas. When one detector is triggered, adjacent zones are automatically alerted.
- Data Logging
The system logs all activity for analysis, with a front panel displaying sensor statuses in real time. USB data transmission enables future integration with visual factory maps.

We managed the entire process, from conceptualising and designing custom hardware and software to building, installing, and supporting the system. The final product was seamlessly implemented, ensuring minimal disruption to Mercedes AMG’s operations while providing a reliable safety solution.
