Monitoring and Controlling Swimming Pools and Leisure centres

Bringing smarter control to leisure centres

Managing a swimming pool efficiently seems no easy task! From maintaining water quality to optimising energy usage, operators face constant challenges in keeping costs low while ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for swimmers.

Our client, a specialist in improving the efficiency and reducing the operating costs of leisure centres and swimming pools, needed a smarter way to monitor and control pool systems remotely. They required a solution that would provide real-time data on key parameters like pump speed, chlorine and pH levels, and power usage, without needing to be on-site.

What did this project involve?

We developed a bespoke IoT control system that allows operators to monitor and adjust pool settings from anywhere, helping to save energy, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall efficiency.

Designing the hardware & PCB

The first step was designing a Modbus pressure sensor, a pressure sensor submodel that talks to the main unit via Modbus. This board is the core of the system, ensuring smooth operation and real-time data transmission.

Integrating the TFT display & user Interface

A 4.7” full-colour TFT display was added to the control unit, providing an easy-to-use interface for on-site staff. The screen displays real-time readings and allows for quick adjustments, making it simple to operate even without internet access.

Developing the interactive web platform

To provide full remote control, we designed an interactive web dashboard that allows users to:

  • View real-time data on pool conditions.
  • Adjust pump speed, chemical dosing, and other settings remotely.
  • Analyse historical performance trends to optimise efficiency.
  • Receive automated alerts when maintenance is needed.

This platform gives operators the flexibility to monitor and manage multiple swimming pools without having to visit each site in person.

Testing and deployment

The first step was designing a Modbus pressure sensor, a pressure sensor submodel that talks to the main unit via Modbus. This board is the core of the system, ensuring smooth operation and real-time data transmission.

A more efficient and cost-effective system

Since implementing this IoT solution, our client has seen significant improvements in pool management. Key benefits include:

  • Lower operating costs
  • Fewer site visits
  • Better water quality management
  • Data-driven insights

By giving operators the ability to monitor, adjust, and optimise swimming pool operations from anywhere, we’ve helped make pool management simpler, more efficient, and cost-effective!
