Winter and Smith was founded by an unlikely partnership between an Electronics Engineer Mike Winter, barely out of college, and Fred Smith, nearly retired. Fred having been involved with the early development of television before WWII and worked with the great TV pioneer John Logie Baird, our electronics experience is rooted deep in history!

Our Story

1970
After leaving Maidstone Electronics, the company is founded September 1970, with the unusual partnership of a young Electronics Engineer Mike Winter, barely out of college, and a highly inventive Mechanical Design Engineer, Fred Smith, nearing retirement.
1972
Nearing retirement already, Fred Smith retires from Winter & Smith in 1972, leaving Mike Winter to run the operations.
1976
The first contract acquired is to design & manufacture automatic & semi automatic test equipment for the American component manufacturer Amphenol. The design requirement is to test connectors and multi-turn potentiometers at their factory in Whitstable, Kent. (We are contacted by Amphenol in late 2015 for advice on a piece of equipment we made in 1976 which to this day is still being used regularly)
2004
James Winter Mike's son joins the team at Winter & Smith as Technical Director.
2005
Until 2005 the company never advertised, our customer base slowly increasing with the movement of engineers around the industry and their recommendation of Winter & Smith to their new companies.
2007
We hold the Microchip Master Certification for our expertise in using Microchip microprocessor based products.
Meeting Room
2008
Winter and Smith relocate to a new, larger premises on Gads Hill Farm, in Higham, that had been converted specifically to meet our requirements. Winter invests in our first Surface Mount Production line.
2011
We are awarded "BEST SMALL BUSINESS" in the Dartford and Gravesham business awards.
2013
Stephen Button Joins Winter & Smith having recently graduated from the University of Kent, with a Masters Degree in Computer systems Engineering!
2016
Winter & Smiths invest in our 2nd Surface Mount Production line.

As Mike Winter retires, his son James Winter takes over as Managing Director. To this day, Winter and Smith runs like clockwork, serving hundreds of industries in need of electronics!
